Gum Disease Treatment NYC
Taking care of your gums is an essential part of your oral hygiene. Gum care starts at home, with a daily hygiene routine that includes flossing to clean below the gum line. Your dentist and hygienist will monitor the health of your gums and can recommend the best gum disease treatment options if they detect signs of inflammation or periodontal (gum) disease.
What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Gum disease is a progressive disease that breaks down the gum tissue and bone surrounding your teeth. It is caused by bacteria in plaque and dental calculus. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and contribute to other systemic health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dementia.
According to the Canadian Dental Association, 7 in 10 adults will experience gum disease in their lifetime. The good news is gum disease is preventable and can be reversed if it’s caught early enough.

Additional Information
Early Signs of Gum Disease (Gingivitis)
Signs of early gum disease, or gingivitis, include red, swollen gums. Your gums may also be tender or bleeding. It’s important to note that gum disease is often a silent disease – many people don’t notice any symptoms until it’s in its more advanced stages.
Symptoms of periodontal (gum) disease:
- Red, swollen or sore gums
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
- Pain when chewing
- Loose or sensitive teeth
You can treat gingivitis at home by eating a healthy diet, brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily. This will help reduce harmful bacteria in your mouth and give your gums a chance to recover.
Although you can brush away plaque, calculus (hardened plaque) can only be removed by your dental hygienist. Be sure to keep up with regular professional dental cleanings to keep hard-to-reach areas free of bacteria. Most people should get their teeth professionally cleaned at least every six months. Your hygienist may recommend more frequent cleanings depending on the condition of your teeth and gums.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
Common symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose or sensitive teeth.
How is gum disease diagnosed?
Gum disease is diagnosed through a dental examination, which includes checking your gums for signs of inflammation, measuring the depth of pockets around your teeth, and taking dental X-rays to assess bone loss.
Is gum disease reversible?
Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, is reversible with proper oral hygiene and professional treatment. However, periodontitis, the advanced stage, can only be managed to prevent further damage.
What treatments are available for gum disease?
Treatments for gum disease include professional dental cleanings, scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), antibiotics, and surgical procedures such as flap surgery, bone grafts, and tissue grafts.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gum disease can be treated and, when done so promptly, fully reversed. The level of treatment required largely depends on how much your gums are affected. If addressed early, it could take relatively simple steps at home. However, letting gum disease linger for too long may necessitate lengthy treatments or surgery.
What is the best toothpaste to stop gum disease?
Maintaining healthy gums is important for your overall mouth health. Several kinds of toothpaste are available that have earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance and feature active ingredients proven to fight gum diseases, such as Colgate Total, Oral B Gum Protection, Crest Gum Detoxify Prohealth Advanced, Meridol, Paradontax, and Lacalut Aktiv.
How can I get my teeth healthy again?
Regaining and then maintaining good oral health starts with flossing daily. Food particles left between the teeth can cause irreversible damage and weaken your gum strength. A simple routine of regular flossing will help keep your smile healthy.
Can I get dentures if I have gum disease?
Even if you’ve had gum disease, there’s still hope for a permanent denture restoration. Providing the underlying jawbone is intact or any affected areas have been treated successfully, this dental solution can help restore your confidence and quality of life.
How much does it cost to treat periodontal disease?
Periodontal Disease can majorly impact your oral health, making professional treatment the only way to restore it. Treatment costs range depending upon how much damage has been done but investing in long-term preventive care will save you money down the line!

The gingiva, which is the medical term for the gums, is the surrounding tissue that protects the structure of our teeth. This soft tissue forms a barrier that protects against infections and stabilizes each tooth. Having healthy gums will help maintain good oral well-being, however, there are many diseases that can affect this part of your mouth.
Professional teeth cleaning offers many advantages that even those with excellent oral hygiene can benefit from. Dental cleanings improve oral health, prevent the development of oral diseases, and help Dr. Davidowitz identify any potential problems before symptoms begin. At Luxury Dentistry NYC, we strive to offer our patients the best possible dental cleaning in NYC, so book an appointment today!
What Happens During A Dental Cleaning?
During your comprehensive examination, Dr. Davidowitz looks at your teeth, gums, plaque level, bone structure, and any risk factors for periodontal disease. Identifying symptoms of gum disease early is the key to protecting your teeth and gums.
One of the effects of periodontal disease is the destruction of the tissue and bone supporting the tooth. The first step in the gum regeneration process is to eliminate existing bacteria that have developed in these pockets between the gum and tooth. A local anesthetic is used before the procedure is performed to ensure the comfort of the patient.
A thorough “deep cleaning”, also known as scaling and root planing, is completed around the affected areas allowing for healing and regeneration of the gum tissue. When indicated, Dr. Davidowitz will utilize advanced diode laser technology around the gum pockets to fully clean the pocket from the bacteria that cause gum disease. This also helps keep the pockets from getting reinfected between cleaning appointments.
What Happens During A Dental Cleaning?
Gum disease can do much more than produce discomfort or bad breath. If left untreated, periodontal conditions can produce tooth decay, itchiness and swelling, bleeding, and other symptoms. However, patients that have periodontal diseases can improve gum health and work with Dr. Davidowitz to help:
- Achieve healthy teeth
- Improve gum health and appearance
- Eliminate bacterial infections
- Lower chance of cross-contamination
- Safeguard your heart and other organs
